baseball - Boston Red Sox See Disappointing End to 2009 Season
The Baltimore Orioles have had very little success this decade - with the start of a new decade maybe the Orioles fortunes will change. The last time the Orioles had success was in 1997 when they reached the American League Championship. When a team plays in the toughest division in baseball - American League East - the team must have better then average players. That is what Baltimore has been for 11 years - just average with no potential upside.
The Red Sox had early success against the Yankee beating them their first 8 meetings. The Red Sox couldn’t sustain any long term success despite their outstanding record - the Yankees got hot and stayed hot all season long. David Ortiz struggled all season and never found his “Big Papi” mojo.
Playing the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox potentially 19 times each per year has taken its toll on the Orioles. The Orioles are typically good starters but fade fast as the season progresses. Only one pitcher on the Orioles starting staff had 10 wins and that was Jeremy Guthrie - but he also had 17 losses. When the ace of a pitching staff has 7 more losses then wins with an ERA over 5.00 - the team won’t win many games and the Orioles didn’t.
Quality pitching needs to be a high priority for the Orioles. The team leader in wins went 10-17 - not what someone would call a Cy Young candidate.
The Tampa Bay Rays went many seasons without winning and in just one year went to the World Series in 2008. The Orioles are in a very long slump they need to get out fo very quickly before they enter Pittsburgh Pirate/Kansas City Royal territory.
If things remain the same for the Orioles as they have for the last decade - Orioles fans will have many heart breaking season in the future. The Orioles have a couple talented players - now it’s time to add some more talent
