Shedding Light on Hunters
The word hunting has an ugly ring to it. This may be brought about by what we see in various campaigns by animal rights activists. I believe it is time to correct the notion about how cruel people could get in playing such an ill-defined sport.
Let us start by defining terms relevant to the topic at hand. It pertains to the practice by which enthusiasts pursue animals for food, trade, or recreation. Categorically, the term should only be used in reference to the regulated legal activity as differentiated from poaching.
Poaching is the act of killing, trapping, or capturing of animals against the stipulations of the law. These people kill animals illegally for the purpose of profit. Parts from non-game and protected animals such as tusks and furs are sold to whoever is interested. Because of this hunters suffer the infamous notion attached to the sport.
Benefits of Hunting
Recreational hunters have the option of being selective. Many people hunt just to enjoy the outdoors while others in reality do it to enjoy the game animal as food and as an alternative to purchased meat.
In fact, wildlife managers from several countries actually take part in ratifying regulatory and licensing bodies. Rules regarding the conditions, manner, and the number of a particular classification of animal to be hunted are being set.
The hunted animal is called a game animal, which is either large or small. Most often they are mammals, migratory or non-migratory game birds. In accordance to its lawful definition, hunting excludes the act of killing animals protected by individuals, such as bears, domesticated animals, or vermin as a way of pest control. Advocates actually believe that this sport is a necessary component and serves as a wildlife management in a modern perspective. The population of animals is being maintained at a healthy number that is within the ecological environment’s carrying capacity especially in the absence of natural predators who keeps the balance in check.
The animals benefit from hunting because overpopulation depletes the food supply resulting to poorer health and a more fierce competition. Also, human beings in turn are being protected from famished animals seeking nourishment from areas inhabited by man.
Branches of government responsible for animal population control determines the favorable herd size in order to maintain the health and wellness of the animals. They set forth the appropriate measures on how to go about it. One way is through the issuance of license to ascertain that the number of animals being taken is within the desirable range.
