Proper Care for a Hunting Knife

feature photo

Using a good rifle to shoot a nice buck is only one good part of the hunt. The next process – dressing and skinning the dear – entails you to make use of a properly maintained hunting knife to execute the task without so much effort.

Make sure that the knife’s blade is always kept dry. They should be stored with the blade closed as in the case of folding knives. Fix blade knives should be stored in a scabbard or casing of heavy leather or canvass. Also, the blade should be maintained as sharp as it can be through the use of sharpening stones and top quality steel. Sharpening should be done at least once every year prior to the big hunt. Remember that dull blades tear instead of cutting and are much more dangerous than sharp knives as they can skid more easily. Moreover, like some hunters do, you can apply a fine coat of oil such as that used in gun and sewing machine to the blade before storing it.
